In August of 1999 I made it to Siam Reap, next to the ancient city of Angkor Wat. Here are some photos:

This is the main temple of Angkor Wat:

These were my guides. The smaller one was 15 years old. He knew every temple in the area (over 70 of them), including when they were built, who built them, and what the subjects of the artwork on them are, including all 1 km. of reliefs that surrounded the base of the main temple (above):

Next we went to the temple of the Bayon, famous for its colossal heads:

Ta Prohm was the most interesting temple. It has been left exactly as it was found, overgrown by jungle:

Late in the afternoon I climbed a hill to visit the temple of Phnom Bakheng and see the area from high up:

The next morning I got up early, passed through the market, and went to Banteay Srei; a remote temple that until 1999 could only be visited with a large armed escort. It has some of the best carvings in the area:

Finally I visited the temple of the Western Mebon, on an island in the Western Baray, an enormous, perfectly-rectangular, man-made reservoir (I missed the Eastern Mebon on an island in a similar Eastern Baray):
