In December of 1999 I made it to Cape Town in South Africa. I rented a car and drove around the cape and the winelands. Here are some photos:


I climbed up Table Mountain, next to the town, and hiked down through a gorge:

After coming down from the mountain I drove to the tip of the Cape of Good Hope, through the national park, which is populated by baboons:

On the way back I stopped at the Botanical Gardens on the back side of Table Mountain:

The next day I went on a long drive through the countryside. It rained a lot and I didn't take many pictures:

The following day I went to see the penguins. There is a colony of jackass penguins that showed up one day in the early 1980s at a beach and began attracting tourists and driving the locals crazy, mainly because they squawk all night long:

After playing wiht the penguins all morning I visited some of the vineyards inland, where one can buy good and incredibly cheap wine. The glasses in the close up picture represend two tasting rounds, which cost a total of $1.70. I also visited the colonial maynor house, and drove around the wine fields:
