Brazil In May of 1999 I made it to Rio. Here are some photos:

I went on a tour of a surprisingly clean and not terribly poor favela (usually translated as "slum"):

On the way to visit the Tijuca Forest I went hanglinding:

I took the cablecar up to the top of the Pau de Acuar (Sugarloaf Peak).

Then I visited the botanic garden:

I went up to see the Christo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer), the famous statue that overlooks Rio.

Afterwards I went to a juice bar and passed by the rental car office, where they demonstrate the model favored by businessmen who are often bothered by terrorists and kidnappers; the one that will repel bullets:

I went into the mountains to Petropolis and Teresopolis. I saw the summer residence of the imperial court:

Finally I went to the town of Buzios, favorite hangout of Mick Jagger, and went on a boat trip:
